1. Apply directly to companies
Going through a recruiter, there is usually a large cost for a company to hire you, remove that cost factor by applying directly. Take the time out to identify companies that build projects that suit your overseas experience.
2. Map out these companies
A lot of these companies’ contact details are all online, connect with HR and Construction Manager/Directors on LinkedIn, see if you can find their number, call them, email them, follow up!
3. Contract roles
Look for short term contract roles to build your local experience. Typically the barrier to entry is easier on short term positions.
4. Try smaller builders
Smaller builders have a harder time finding candidates, they don’t have established recruitment teams, their process usually isn’t as dialled in as the bigger companies, usually have less people approaching them for roles.
5. Work for a subcontractor
I have seen a large number of people who have successfully got their foot in the door with subcontractors, again, typically they have less people approaching them compared to building companies, try and identify these businesses.
6. Visa
A lot of hiring managers and HR teams aren’t experts in visas. Be across your rules and regulations of your visa, I have had people miss out on jobs due to not being aware of their working limitations/costs of sponsorship transfer etc. Be clear and upfront in the interview.
If you can, try and lock in a Permanent Residency visa before you move to Australia if you are looking to settle here permanently. Consult with an Immigration Lawyer about your options.
7. On a Working Holiday Visa with a 6-month limitation?
Engage with temp recruiters in your space who can offer you short term contracts.
8. Try "Regional" areas first
Consult the Australian Immigration website, check out areas that are classified as Regional. There are usually more opportunities, less competition for applicants and less restrictions around working arrangements.
Its hard, I've been there, but its achievable.
